Topical Tirade

I thought I’d moved on from Neal of Arabia; thought that part of my life — and blogging life — had been put to bed. But no, even old, not-being-updated-any-more blogs are still available (you lucky people!) and once in a while I still get the odd comment on a NoA posting.

Few comments are odder than the one I got yesterday on a post I wrote about a friend’s Halloween party. Here’s what “Jang” (no other detail supplied) has to say on our antics:

Uugh! Get a life (like Jangs) people!

Uugh! Get a life (like Jang's) people!

**** SNIP ****

why do americans (and british?) want to export their cultural grotesqueness all over the globe?
weren’t the nasty halloween hoodlems in england proof enough of the foolishness and fruits of this infantile celebration of ugliness?

i can’t fathom how little meaning people see in life that they are so wedded to the dark imagery of halloween and, if you even mention taking it away from them, they howl as if you were cutting their hearts out.
america, the great satan (a name she vehemently protests, as she drapes herself in the imagery popularized by pirates and poison bottles), and her british cohorts.

doesn’t she deserve her reputation? remember, before the nazis gassed and burned the jews, they plastered skulls as nazi emblems on their panzers and invaded poland. no problem today, as most of western culture adores skulls as decorations, tatoos, and so on– halloween has become just the crescendo to an ongoing symphony of darkness and death. they love to put them on their beautiful newborns’ clothing. you want to find (or create) the demonic side to the beautiful children…. so you can continue being a lost child youself.

why not be on a real diplomatic mission …. for the LIGHT???

Blimey! Didn’t think we were that bad. Jang, if you think the photos represent a celebration of ugliness you should see some of my mates without their makeup. I’m being kind to my readers, trust me on this. And the last time I went on a mission… for the LIGHT, it was 4am and I stubbed my toe on the toilet pedestal, so don’t tell me I haven’t suffered for the greater good.

I started this post with the intention of providing an incisively intelligent repost to Jang’s comments, but as you can see that noble cause quickly degenerated into an excuse for some cheap gags.

Sorry Jang, but did you really expect any better from a baby-eating devil worshipper? Right, got to go now. I need to sharpen my scythe before tonight’s black mass.

After reading Jangs comments i have to leave a comment too because it seems that Jang doesn´t know anything about the origins of Halloween:

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the “Celtic New Year”. Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

It´s an old european tradition (remember – the celtics were not only british ir irish)!

Chris can i join you at your black mass? 🙂
